Cadbury’s owner has bought a British brand of protein bars as it shifts towards healthier products.
Consumer goods giant Mondelez has bought Grenade, a Solihull-based sports nutrition firm started in 2010 by married couple Alan and Juliet Barratt.
Grenade makes the Carb Killa protein bar, a best-selling product among bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts.
The move to buy a majority stake in the business from private equity firm Lion Capital is Mondelez’s first UK acquisition since it controversially bought Cadbury in 2010.
It reportedly valued Grenade at about £200million – up from £72million in 2017, when Lion purchased it.
Alan Barratt said: ‘I couldn’t be more excited about our future growth and continued innovation.’
