Police are investigating after a house fire in Sydney’s south on Wednesday morning.

Emergency services were called to a home at Valley Way, Gymea Bay, at 4.15am following reports of a house fire.

NSW Fire and Rescue attended and extinguished the blaze, which had spread into nearby bushland.

The homeowner, a 57-year-old woman, was evacuated with her dog.

Officers from Sutherland Shire Police Area Command established a crime scene and have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the blaze

The woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, before being taken to Sutherland Hospital for observation.

Neighbouring residents on Valley Way and Matong Place were also evacuated as a precaution.
