Two 15-year-old clinging onto a paddle board have been rescued by authorities in Florida after they drifted more than a mile off shore in rough waters.

The boy and girl, who have not been identified, had been using the paddle board of Playalinda Beach, just south of Orlando, when strong winds swept them out to sea last week.

Footage from the NASA helicopters, which was posted online on Tuesday, showed the two children floating on the paddle board as the FWC rescue vessel approached.

Authorities say the waves were around three to five foot at the time.

Authorities say the children were already 1.2 miles offshore when they were located.

They were continuing to drift further out to sea.

The rescuers described the children as being ‘distressed’ when they were finally located.

They were assessed by first responders before being returned to their families.

The huge rescue operation also involved the US Coast Guard, Brevard County Sheriff and Brevard County Fire Rescue.
