Goldman to open technology hub in Birmingham as it doubles down on plans to get staff back into the office
UK expansion: Goldman Sachs is opening a technology hub in Birmingham
Banking giant Goldman Sachs has doubled down on its plans to get staff back into the office.
The US titan, whose chief executive David Solomon in February called working from home an ‘aberration’, is opening an office in Birmingham.
It wants to create a technology hub filled with ‘several hundred’ workers there and will shift some staff up from London, with the aim of opening in the third quarter of 2021, but hopes to hire staff from the local area.
Richard Gnodde, chief executive of the international arm, said: ‘A new office in Birmingham will diversify our UK footprint and give us access to a broad and deep talent pool.
‘We see tremendous opportunity to enhance our UK presence.’
While UK lenders such as HSBC, Lloyds Bank and Metro Bank plan to slash their office space, Goldman has been keen to get bankers back to the office.
Most UK staff work in London, though its consumer bank Marcus has a presence in Milton Keynes.
