Sam Newman has been asked by right-wing political party One Nation to consider a future career in politics.

The 75-year-old former co-host of ‘The Footy Show’ and AFL great said he would have a ‘cup of coffee’ with the party representative to discuss the issue, but at this stage he was not interested in joining any party.

Mr Newman, an avowed supporter of Donald Trump and who had long railed against political correctness, resigned from his contract with the Nine Network in June 2020 after making controversial remarks about the Black Lives Matter movement.

The host of the podcast ‘You Cannot Be Serious’ told the Herald Sun he took a phone call from a One Nation representation.

‘I said, ‘I am happy to have a cup of coffee with you, but if you are asking me to be part of it or join it, or whatever, I am not interested in that,’ he said.

‘I don’t have a bent politically for any party whatever it is — unless of course Donald Trump asked me to join his.

‘I am not interested in any political aspirations no matter what party it is, but I’ll be very happy to have a coffee with people who are sincere about whatever it is they want to speak to me about.’

Mr Newman had previously toyed with the idea of running for Lord Mayor of Melbourne but did not nominate.

Mr Newman’s contract with the Nine Network ended last year after he called George Floyd a ‘piece of s**t’.

Mr Floyd died after a police officer placed his knee on his neck during an arrest which sparked the Black Lives Matter movement.

‘The cancel culture kicked in and I got cancelled. The sponsors got a bit edgy … and I said if you want me to disassociate myself then I’m happy to do that,’ Mr Newman said on the Sacked: Showbix podcast last year.
