Philanthropic donations to UK universities have dropped by almost a fifth in the past academic year, research shows.
Eleven institutions are now classed as ‘fragile’ in terms of their fundraising activities amid the Covid pandemic.
New philanthropic funds secured during the 2019-20 academic year totalled £1.09billion, according to a survey of charitable giving – a £236million or 17 per cent fall since the previous year.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (Case) report reveals the average value of the largest new gifts and pledges fell by 24 per cent.
However, the number of donors rose by 3.6 per cent, rising to five per cent when counting only alumni donors.
Overall, 214,115 donors gave money to 94 institutions surveyed, with 219 benefactors pledging gifts of more than £500,000.
The institutions from across the UK and Ireland provided data to Case for the 12-month period from August 1, 2019 to July 31, 2020.
